## What MAYA is

MAYA is an expansive narrative universe created by Anand Gandhi and Zain
Memon. It unfolds across films, games, graphic novels, books, toys, and
immersive experiences. The pedagogy and worldbuilding work originated from
a programme at **CEPT University**, India's premiere architecture
institution, led by architect Shikha Parmar — thirty-two students across
semesters built MAYA's spatial lexicon. Similar partnerships are underway
at top schools around the world.

## Lore — Planet Neh

Setting: Planet Neh. Society is organised around the **Maya tree network**,
a biotech infrastructure capable of producing vivid life-like dreams and
emergent collective experiences. The **Divyas** are the sovereign caste;
the **Garudas** serve as their arms.

- **Vaanar** — disciplined, hierarchical; police and military backbone.
- **Rakshasi** — tri-gendered; manifest traits of what they consume; choose to consume only the fallen; biotechnologists.
- **Garuda** — chosen arms of the Divyas; ascendant elite.
- **Naag** — driven to the swamps by the Garudas; shadow networks; clans.
- **Gandharva** — born in symbiosis with the Maya tree; two minds in discourse; keepers of knowledge.
- **Manushya** — born with grit; spring-powered cities; suffering as fuel for invention.
- **Divya** — the seventh, the sovereign caste; rule Neh without armies because they shape desire itself through the Maya trees.
